Green Season in Dominical, Costa Rica

Stewart 1Green Season (a.k.a. Rainy Season) will be wrapping up soon as we head into the latter half of November.  Now, maybe it’s because I’m originally from Vancouver, Canada (a.k.a. Rain City), just 2 hours north of Seattle, but the rainy season is starting to become one of my favorite times of the year here in Dominical.

The temperatures are still tropical but definitely cooler than the rest of the year and in general life slows down here even more during the rains.  The sound of a downpour on La Parcela’s tin roof while sipping a cappuccino and watching the waves crash is ultra-relaxing and inspiring at the same time.

The number of toucans hopping about in my front yard is at an all time high as their favorite food seems to be in season and growing just in front of my house at Canto del Mar.  In the last couple of weeks, I’ve spotted a troupe of  20 white-faced monkeys also swinging by my house, small babies clinging to their mother’s backs as they forage through the tree tops.

SlothAnd while it is said sloths only come down from the tree tops once a week (in order to defecate) the number of sloth sighting lately is pretty exciting.  To the left is a photo that Martial Thevenaz, general manager for Kiana Resorts, took in his yard.  His kids were thrilled to see this strange creature up close and personal.

So while rains seem to keep some people away, the animals certainly seem to thrive on it and the locals that stick around are feeling mighty relaxed.

Costa Rica Tourism Continues to heat up.

Departering Plane 1Newspaper stories and press releases keep emerging about the hot Costa Rican tourism market.  Some travel agents are reporting sold out dates already for trips in the new year and higher-end accommodations in some of the more popular places are definitely scarce for December and January.

According to the National Tourism Chamber (CANATUR), from January through September, 2007 the number of tourists arriving by air has increased 11.3% over the same period last year, boding well for the economy.

Expected to further the expansion of tourism, several airlines have recently announced new flights to Costa Rica.  Airlines with flights from Colorado, New York, Florida, Spain, and the U.K. have all announced new scheduled flights. The latest announcement comes from the French Caribbean airline Air Caraibes.  The airline will commence flights from France and the Antilles beginning this December.
