Punta Dominical April 07 News

My parents come to visit. “The best trip of our lives”.

Mom and Dad WinterI’ve been busy this high season with all of Punta Dominical’s marketing efforts and so when 3 different groups of visitors all descended on my home at Canto del Mar in March, I wasn’t sure I’d have a lot of time to show them a good time.

Still, I was determined to make sure that everyone saw a toucan, spotted a monkey or a sloth as I wanted them to see how amazing Dominical really is.

I wasn’t too worried about my friends, but this was the first ‘big’ trip for my parents so they had no idea what to expect (nor did I).

I broke them all in easy by taking them to La Parcela Restaurant – a beautiful spot on the point with dramatic ocean views.  Next, a trip to Hacienda Baru satisfied Geoff’s one wish – to see a sloth. In fact I think he was almost disappointed that it was so easy – he had already spotted 2 while hiking and then saw a baby sloth as they headed to the parking lot.  I assured him this was rare and lucky.

My parents were dying to see monkeys. They woke up extra early to start a guided 6am Mangrove hike, but alas no monkeys. But once again, at the Hacienda Baru parking lot a troop of 20 or more monkeys swung overhead.  Mission accomplished.

For the big finale, I sent them all off snorkeling to Cano Island with tour company Southern Expeditions.  I’m not sure if my parents even knew exactly what this involved but I figured they could also swim or sit on the beach if snorkeling wasn’t for them.  Well, my dad at age 73 has a favorite new hobby I think.

Mom and Dad WinterThis is a photo Geoff took with his cool underwater camera, near Cano Island – I believe this is a puffer fish.

My brother emailed me a week after my parents returned home. Apparently Costa Rica now ranks as ‘the best trip of their life’.  It doesn’t get much better than that!

Marisol – The Costa Rican Chapter of your life story starts here.

Marisol - Costa Rica Punta Dominical just announced the release of 54 spectacular ocean view condos set on a lush jungle ridge.  Prices of these one and two bedroom, fully-furnished homes will start in the mid-$200s.  Response thus far has been very strong.  There is very little if any condominium product currently for sale in the Dominical region yet the demand for condos throughout Costa Rica has grown immensely and investment in the southern pacific zone continues to expand, making Marisol a very unique offering.  Contact the Punta Dominical office for more information or visit the website www.DreamMarisol.com.

The Great Turtle Race

Turtle RaceSlow and steady might win a race among 11 leatherback turtles tagged with GPS transmitters and engaged in a 1,500 kilometer heated swim contest from Costa Rica to the Galápagos.

The race, designed to bring attention to the species' endangered status, started at the leatherback’s nesting grounds in Costa Rica, and invites people to vote for their favorite hard-shelled contestant.

Virtually unchanged for 100 million years, the massive turtles have outlived the dinosaurs but their numbers have drastically declined in the past decade. Playa Grande used to host thousands of females as they laid eggs every year; fewer than 100 nested there in the last five years, according to Conservation International.

Theatre in the JungleDames and Dudes

I’d heard about the Dominical Little Theatre from my co-worker Amanda Courter who had played the lead in “The Female Odd Couple” but still I hadn’t quite pictured what it would be like to go see a production in Dominical. It was quite the experience. I describe it as ‘small-town America” meets “small tropical jungle-town”.  The mix is quite enchanting and the talent is surprisingly good.  Sitting in an open-air theatre with frogs, crickets and geckos chirping, locals gathered to watch their friends and neighbors perform in “Dames & Dudes”. Congratulations to the cast and crew on the commitment and community spirit generated by this amazing event. Who could have imagined all these talented actors, singers and musicians were hiding out in southern Costa Rica?
