Creative Force and published author on Central American architecture, Ronald Zurcher (president of Zurcher Arquitectos in Costa Rica) reflects on his vision for the unique home designs for Kiana, inspired by the beauty and prevailing architecture of Costa Rica:
"The traditional stilt housing of the region, found historically on palm plantations, has been a primary influence. Then, by using indigenous materials, colors and construction methods, we were able to create a fresh and contemporary resort strongly rooted to the past.
I personally like the sense of enclosure provided by the rain forest and mountains so close to the ocean. I think it is very unique and makes you feel that every single villa site is totally different from the others providing a great sense of privacy to the architecture yet reinforcing a strong sense of belonging.
The proportions of the development site provided over 1000 feet of dramatic oceanfront views and allowed me to create a series of courtyards giving a traditional Latin feel while reinforcing the sense of community with these Costa Rican homes through a small residential-like scale.
My goal was to help bring growth to the Dominical community through a sustainable development that also helps bring out the local culture."
The finished products are genuine Costa Rican homes that instill owners with a true sense of belonging.
